Nociones básicas de Régimen Jurídico Internacional del Trabajo

An introduction to international labour legislation

The inclusion of an overview of the international legal aspects of labour regulations and workers’ rights in the university labour relations curriculum would seem, today, to be an undeniable necessity. There are a series of factors of international importance that have an impact on the shaping of national labour markets, including that of Spain, and on understanding the problems involved in the legal regulation of labour relations: these include the socio-economic transformations ushered in by the current process of globalisation, changes in productive models employed and in the structuring of the international division of labour resulting therefrom, the growing internationalisation of the economy and participation in economic integration processes.

Therefore, it is the mission of Nociones básicas de Régimen Jurídico Internacional del Trabajo to offer an overview of these questions. It aims to achieve the difficult balance between the search for rigorous and accurate explanations of the content –indispensible for a fundamental understanding of international labour legislation– and

the need to focus explanations on the truly core legal aspects of the issue.

The book is divided into three parts: the first provides a basic explanation of the bases of public international law as a body within which international legislation on labour relations is created and applied. Part two provides details of the operations and principal milestones of those international cooperation organisations –both universal and European– whose activities include generic or specific coverage of labour-related issues. Lastly, the third part covers the regulatory dimension of labour relations, perceptible in the development of the process of European integration and, consequently, in European Union law, accepting the importance of the EU’s legislation in understanding the framework of labour relations in Spain.
