Soberanía Popular y Derecho Internacional
Popular Sovereignty and International law

Sovereignty is and shall remain a key concept in international law although, traditionally, the concept of sovereignty has been an abstract one attributed generically to the state. In turn, and again traditionally, little attention has been paid to the concept of “the people”.

Nevertheless, it can clearly be seen that this legal order is now beginning to attach importance to the people, and this shall necessarily lead to a break with the aforementioned abstract concept of sovereignty. The goal of this book is precisely to highlight this new trend towards recognising the principle of popular sovereignty in international law.

1. An introduction to the concept of the people in international law

2. Towards a recognition of the principle of popular sovereignty in international law

3. The content of popular sovereignty: peoples’ rights

4. People’s right to democracy

5. People’s right to development

6. Peoples’ right to peace

7. The legal consequences of popular sovereignty for international law
